5 women who changed the dynamics of Indian TV forever

More often than not, television serves as an important medium of
entertainment, and over the years, several characters in different shows
have impressed viewers. Today, on International Women’s Day, we
remember a few of the women characters that created a strong foothold on
the tube and are still remembered for the impact they created.
Tulsi in Kyunki... Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi...This has been one of the biggest shows on Indian television, and Tulsi, a pivotal character played by Smriti Irani, was that of an opinionated girl who faces several trials and triumphs in her life. During the course of the show, the character evolves, and graduates from being the ‘perfect’ daughter-in-law to an ‘ideal’ wife, and later a grandmother.
Anandi in Balika Vadhu
With as many as three actors playing the role of Anandi, the character has been one of the most popular ones on the tube. While the little Anandi (Avika Gor) stole viewers’ hearts with her innocence, the grown-up one’s (Pratyusha Banerji) show of strength impressed the audience. Actor Toral Rasputra has taken the baton forward now, voicing her opinion about widow remarriage, education, child marriage and other subjects.
Archana in Pavitra Rishta
She was a docile girl who shared a strong connection with her mother. Having sacrificed everything for her family, Archana’s (Ankita Lokhande) journey of self-discovery highlighted her inner strength. Post-marriage, she faced numerous problems at home, work and in her relationship, but took them head on. In five years, the complex character moved from being a young girl to a grandmother due to the time leap.
Priya in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain
Unconventional, independent and vocal, Priya, played by Sakshi Tanwar, stood her ground, and knew how to work her way around problems. Though Priya married late, when she finally tied the knot, it was on her own terms. The character displayed the right mix of modern and traditional values, which was liked by the audience.
Sandhya in Diya Aur Baati
She dreamt of becoming a cop, but got married due to some unforeseen circumstances. However, Sandhya’s (Deepika Singh) never-say-die spirit is what shines through. Her intelligence and perseverance have helped her in numerous situations — from accepting her illiterate husband, to facing challenges created by her strict mother-in-law. Sandhya finally becomes a cop while fulfilling the responsibilities of a daughter-in-law of a conservative family.
